Mayor Gustavo González Villaseñor said that downtown merchants will be given a month to remove signs that are not in accordance with current city regulations.
Puerto Vallarta - In coordination with the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Board for the Rescue and Preservation of the Historic Center, the Municipal Government is taking the first step in an intense crusade to recover and preserve the "Old Mexico" charm and ambiance of Puerto Vallarta's historic downtown center.

During a recent ordinary session of the Puerto Vallarta City Council, Mayor Gustavo González Villaseñor said that the clean up efforts will begin with enforcing city regulations for signs and advertisements in the downtown area. Downtown merchants will be given month to remove signs that are not in accordance with current city regulations, and if they fail to do so, city authorities will intervene.

"The municipal authorities are calling on local businesses to care for the visual image of Puerto Vallarta. We all must have tourist consciousness, and these efforts begin at home, and it is the in the best interest of the shopkeepers to present a better image of their businesses" the mayor said.

At the same time, Villaseñor issued a warning to business owners, saying that in case the resolve is not observed within the established time period, a crusade of over 100 personnel from City Hall will remove ads and signs that break the law and affect the image of the city, but above all, that contrast with the promotional efforts being made.

The measure was unanimously endorsed by the City Council; all members agreed that these actions will benefit us all. Councilman Cayetano Garcia from the Regulations Commission, said "We should all be equal before the law and the regulations," and that businesses violating the regulation should be fined. The mayor informed the City Council that he has ordered the removal of publicity along the tourist strip (posters, banners and advertising,) however, despite the efforts, the problem has not been completely solved.

"The resolve is for the regulation to be observed by everyone, both private individuals and companies, who uses these spaces for advertising. We are going to set an example to keep government propaganda from being posted in areas where it is forbidden. We are going to remove it all," he said.

Councilman Cayetano Garcia proposed that companies that promote shows and public events be required to pay a guarantee deposit so after the event has taken place, all publicity be removed from walls, as he remarked that El Pitillal is covered with advertising of this type.

The proposal of Councilman Garcia gave the mayor the cue to make the decision to recover the downtown visual image. He even invited council members to periodically walk the downtown area and encourage abiding by the regulations and promoting the tourist consciousness that must exist in order to regain the image of the typical Mexican village characteristic of Puerto Vallarta.

The mayor also asked for the council’s support in acting against businesses and persons who are not fulfilling their duty of enforcing regulations regarding the visual image of Puerto Vallarta. Villaseñor went on to say that authorities will be working with the Historic Center Board to tend to the needs of downtown Puerto Vallarta businesses, while encouraging them to help preserve the downtown area's charm and ambiance.
