Mascota-Las Palmas Highway Construction Update

While the Sedeur claims that 95% of the construction on the Mascota-Las Palmas Highway has been completed, local media sources report that the work-in-progress has not reached 90%.
Puerto Vallarta - News on the long-awaited completion of the Mascota-Las Palmas Highway once again made headlines in several of Puerto Vallarta's local publications. While the Secretary of Urban Development (Sedeur) claims that 95% of the construction on the Mascota - Las Palmas Highway has been completed, local media sources report that the work-in-progress has not surpassed the 90% mark.

According to recently published articles on NoticiasPV.com and El Sol, the projected date for opening the highway is behind schedule, due to the fact that the bridge to San Sebastian has not yet been built and parts of the road still lack the asphalt surfacing, drainage ditches, guard rails and road signs that will make the highway safe for motorists.

El Informador, the newspaper that covers local and state news in Jalisco, reported that in the past, Sedeur has announced dates for completion of the highway on at least three occasions; December 31, 2004, the first week of February 2005, and again at the end of last month.

Director of Highway Infrastructure Francisco Javier Pérez Martínez told reporters that the contractors' failure to meet construction deadlines set for the Mascota - Las Palmas Highway was due to unforeseen delays caused by unseasonably heavy rainfall and underestimating the amount of time and work required to clear rocky terrain along the route.

Though Martínez has assured local authorities that the highway will be finished by the end of this month, the mayors of Mascota and Puerto Vallarta are not as optimistic. They are predicting it will take at least another month of construction for the highway to be completed, and are hoping it will be open to traffic by May and June of this year.

This stretch of highway will not only connect Vallarta with Jalisco's mountainous region and provide easy access to Mascota, a quaint agricultural town known for its horse breeding and training industry and a popular destinations among Vallarta locals and visitors, but will also significantly reduce travel time between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
