Puerto Vallarta Plans Airport Expansion & Renovation
email this pageprint this pageemail usPVNN

Once all the work is completed, the Puerto Vallarta International airport could rank among the top three tourist airports in Mexico.
Puerto Vallarta - Plans for the expansion and renovation of the existing terminal at Puerto Vallarta's Gustavo Díaz International Airport are underway, with a budget of $127 Million Pesos and a little over 300 days to complete the project.

During the Winter 2004/Spring 2005 "high season," PVR international airport received record numbers of over 3 million passengers, about a 10% increase over the past year. But long lines and disorganization in the baggage and departure areas during tourist season only highlighted the need for the projected plan for airport expansion.

According to airport General Director Sr. José Gomez, the expansion and renovation work will give the building an "orderly and uniform first-world image," and represent a 70% increase in usable space. The immigration area will double in size, there will be seven carousels instead of the three that presently serve both domestic and international flights, and the store fronts along the promenade will be standardized. Outside, the bus parking area will be expanded from 7 to 19 spaces.

A second stage of the construction project is scheduled to begin in 2007. The time share module will be expanded from its present square shape of 250 square meters, to a rectangular space measuring 450 square meters. This will facilitate the flow of passengers who will find it easier to exit if they do not want to remain inside to get information.

During the presentation of the proposal for Airport Expansion and Renovation, Maria José Zorrilla suggested that the airport be decorated with a "regional touch" because, once all the work is completed, the Puerto Vallarta International airport could rank among the top three tourist airports in Mexico, along with the Cancun and Tijuana airports.
