Puerto Vallarta Secretary of Economy Proposes Marketplace

Puerto Vallarta's Secretary of Economy, Armando Sojo Garza Adalpe
Puerto Vallarta - In a meeting last Tuesday, Puerto Vallarta's Secretary of Economy, Armando Sojo Garza Adalpe, met with Mayor Gustavo González Villaseñor and a group of business owners to propose a new marketplace that would give street and beach vendors a place to run "legitimate" businesses.

According to Adalpe, if put into place his plan would not only fortify the city's "formal" economy by legitimizing "informal" salesmen, but would also be the solution to one of the problems that affects Puerto Vallarta as a tourist destination.

Sr. Adalpe indicated that the Jalisco Secretary of Economy has $2 million pesos available for the project, and the Governor of Jalisco would contribute another $2 million pesos if city authorities would donate a similar amount of money or the space, possibly on the Rio Cuale, to establish a new marketplace.

He explained that the needed space already exists on the Rio Cuale, but it would depend on the viability of the plan. "What we intend to do is adapt the space where two types of merchants can be established; the formal businesses that want to expand their market by having an additional location, and the informal merchants that want to become formal."

Adalpe added that a new marketplace would also contribute to the gradual relocation of all the informal commerce that currently affects Puerto Vallarta's image, while at the same time it would give both street and beach vendors the opportunity and tools they need to help them become legitimate businesses.

He pointed out that Gustavo González Villaseñor's great disposition, together with the support of Eduardo García Joya of the Puerto Vallarta office of Economic Promotion, should facilitate the organization and participation of local merchants and businessmen. He also stated that if his plan is approved by City Hall, work on the proposed marketplace could be initiated within a month.
