Puerto Vallarta Audiences Love "The Phantom"
email this pageprint this pageemail usTJ Hartungr - PVNN

A Night with the Phantom, a multimedia presentation at Santa Barbara Theatre, has generated so much interest that it has been held over and will continue playing Sunday nights through June 19th.
Puerto Vallarta - At first, the audience was a little skeptical, but within a few minutes, when Kathy Overly had completed her first song, all were very enthusiastic and looking forward to the remainder of a great show. During intermission, people were commenting on the unique concept of joining an 80-year-old, black & white, silent movie with the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber sung by Kathy Overly and Sol Rose, both of whom have wonderful voices. People in the audience were amazed that the songs were so perfectly timed to the movie, as though Mr. Webber had written the movie's musical score.

"A Night with the Phantom" is a multimedia presentation at Santa Barbara Theatre. The movie is the original (1925) "The Phantom of the Opera" starring Lon Chaney, and the songs are from Webber's Broadway play and Joel Schumaker's movie of the same name.

On Sunday evenings, the movie is shown using an old 16mm projector, and at key places, Kathy and Sol sing Webber's songs as though it were part of the movie. Both Kathy and Sol are well known to theatre audiences for their excellent voices. Kathy Overly's recent accomplishments include "Abba Cadabra", "Manhattan Nights", and "Some Enchanted Evening".

Sol Rose, a "semi-retired" entertainer with a long list of accomplishments on Broadway and in Las Vegas (and the owner of Café Bohemio, a very popular local restaurant), has been recently seen at The Blue Chairs on Sunday evenings, and in "Manhattan Nights" and "The Last Time I Saw Paris" at La Petit Restaurant.

To add to the entertainment, two classic cartoons are shown prior to the main show. A different pair of cartoons are shown each evening from a collection that includes such notable cartoon characters as: Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Barney Google, Flip the Frog, Popeye and Scrappy.

Every Sunday in June through the 19th, audiences will have their choice of show only, or dinner and show. That wonderful chef at Santa Barbara Theater, Santiago, has conjured up three delicious entrees with theme names such as "Opera House Beef," "Chandelier Chicken" and "Phantom Fish Filet."

This show has generated so much interest that it has been held over through the first 3 Sundays in June. It will also be brought back for Halloween in October and probably again towards the end of the year when high season returns. Reservations may be made at Santa Barbara Theater, 351 Olas Altas, or by calling 223-2048. Tickets are 250 pesos for Dinner and Show, or only 100 pesos for the Show-Only option. Reservations are highly recommended as seating is limited.
