Heat Wave Still Going Strong

An intense heat wave now sweeping across Mexico has broken records in the capital and is expected to continue for at least another eight days, health officials said Wednesday.

States such as Coahuila, Campeche, Yucatan and Tamaulipas can expect temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius (104 F), said Carmen Segura Rangel, the head of the National Civic Protection body.

Intense heat close to 35 degrees Celsius (95 F) will also hit Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Guerrero, Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas and San Luis Potosi, she said.

In Guadalajara, which has experienced a rise in heat-related health problems, the community is taking action to protect children and seniors, state secretary of health Alfonso Petersen Farah said. The heat, he said, causes fluids to leave the body which can lead to dehydration as well as gastrointestinal problems. These gastrointestinal disorders have risen 10 percent in the last two weeks.

In Mexico City, a recordbreaking 31.8 degrees Celsius (89.2 F) and 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 F) between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. was reached at the international airport on Sun., June 5. The previous record was 30.5 degrees, recorded on the same day in 1989, said Segura Rangel.

She said the record high was caused by high-pressure systems that limited cloudiness and led to dry conditions.
