Malecon Extension Update

start...stop...
Puerto Vallarta - The new extension of the Malecón, or Malecón of the Marina, was inaugurated on Thursday, June 23rd. This section, which connects the original Malecón to the pedestrian bridge over the Cuale River, was completed at a cost of $9 million pesos, which came from federal, state and municipal authorities equally sharing the expense.

Despite the fact that the new extension to the Malecón wasn't quite ready for the June 23rd inauguration ceremony, the day wasn't a total loss. An agreement was reached with Governor Francisco Ramírez Acuña and National Secretary of Tourism Rodolfo Elizondo Torres for an additional five million pesos for the continuation of the Malecón to Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas.

The cost of developing the ocean walk from the pedestrian bridge to Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas is estimated at just under ten million pesos, and construction will begin on this phase as soon as the city receives the federal funds promised by the secretary of tourism. These funds won't be released until 2006, but the promise of federal funding allows construction to continue while further funds are located.

In the meantime, work on the north side of the pedestrian bridge continues. Last month, police escorted approximately 40 vendors from Parque Benito Juarez to new locations on the Isla Rio Cuale and on Aquiles Serdán on Puerto Vallarta's South Side. Then, workers circled the beachfront Parque Benito Juarez with a chain-link fence and removed the playground equipment to make way for the new parking lot.

On Tuesday, June 28, the trees in Benito Juárez Park were cut down to open up the ocean view from Morelos street, where the new Malecón extension reaches the pedestrian bridge. The parking lot project, one of the five proposed by the current administration, will replace the 50-space DIF parking lot that was located in front of the park with 302 parking spaces.

According to Communication Secretary Gloria Palacios, construction of the Benito Juárez Park parking lot is projected to be completed by December with a total cost of approximately four million pesos. "We are allowing a three-month extension period in case of catastrophe, but if all goes well, the parking lot will be completed within six months," she said.
