Puerto Vallarta - Get out your tie-dyed shirts and other 60’s paraphernalia! Jefferson Starship, one of rock’s biggest legends, is coming to Puerto Vallarta in October for two concert performances. At last Saturday night's press conference to kick off the Mexical Cross Cultural Soccer Clinics for Kids, promoter Benny Cukier announced the upcoming concerts will be held at the CasaMagna Marriott in Puerto Vallarta.

Originally the 1960’s band Jefferson Airplane, whose anti-war, peace, love, turn-on and tune-out song themes made them one of the most popular rock groups from that era, the band's first and most famous hits were "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," a song with subliminal lyrics about drug use in the 60’s. They played at Woodstock, the Monterrey Pop, and the famous Altamont music festivals.

The band started in 1965 in the San Francisco night club scene and when Grace Slick joined the band two years later, Jefferson Airplane’s two hits launched "The Summer of Love" making the group America’s most successful rock band that year. In the early 1970’s they collaborated with members of the Grateful Dead, David Crosby, Graham Nash, among others to create "Blows Against the Empire," a vision of music, community and science fiction.

In 1974 the group changed their name to Jefferson Starship and the hits just kept on coming. With so many top-ten songs under their belt, until one actually listened to the songs they wrote and performed, a common response has always been, "oh, they did that song too?" Kantner and Slick married and their daughter China joined the group.

In 1980 founding members sought solo work and collaborations with other bands before briefly reuniting once again as Jefferson Airplane in 1989 for an album and summer tour. This led them back to Starship and they have been producing music and touring ever since. Grace Slick left the group in the early 90’s to pursue art, but the unique sound remains.

The two founders of Jefferson Airplane, guitarist/songwriter/vocalist Paul Kantner and vocalist Marty Balin were both crucial in developing the "San Francisco sound that changed the course of pop music," and after 40 years, they are still with the group. The band will be starting a summer tour in Italy on July 7th, playing six venues there before returning to the U.S. and Canada playing the West the remainder of the month.

August sends the rockers back east for shows, returning for a San Diego concert at the end of the month. Taking much of September off, Jefferson Starship will tour Texas and will be making their only appearance in Mexico in Puerto Vallarta on October 8th and 9th., before closing out the year in Hawaii and a special "Heroes of Woodstock" tour in November.

October 8th, the first night of the legendary rock group's appearance in Puerto Vallarta, will feature an acoustical unplugged version of their concert with seating for only a select 300 individuals. A full electric rock concert is scheduled for the following night.

The appearance of Jefferson Starship is undoubtedly the biggest U.S. music act to ever appear in Puerto Vallarta, and promoter Benny Cukier has plans to bring big-name rock concerts to Puerto Vallarta twice a year. Cukier chose the Marriott as the venue due to their valuable community support as well as magnificent accommodations. Tickets are on sale NOW at the Marriott's Concierge's desk - Tel: 226-0017.
