Texas AG Impressed With Mexico's Efforts

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
Mexico City - Mexico has an "overwhelming" commitment to fight drug-related violence along the border, and authorities on both sides must have a common vision for making the region safe, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said.

"It is essential that Texas and Mexico have a very effective working relationship and cooperation," Mr. Abbott told reporters after meetings with senior Mexican officials. "The people of Texas should know that officials in Mexico are doing everything they can as quickly as they can to address these issues."

Mr. Abbott said he was impressed with briefings he had received from Mexican Attorney General Daniel Cabeza de Vaca; U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza; Eugenio Hernández, governor of Tamaulipas, the state that borders Texas; and Foreign Ministry officials.

He said he had been told about "detailed plans" Mexico has to fight drug violence in Nuevo Laredo and other places along the border, where rival drug cartels have been fighting each other. He did not elaborate.

"The impression I have is there have been very meaningful improvements already in Nuevo Laredo and that the Mexicans are working to do even better," he said.

He said that his discussions did not delve much into drug cartels but that "I personally have seen no evidence to indicate the cartels are operating on the U.S. side."

The talks did not cover questions of terrorism along the border either, he said.

Mr. Abbott said he would be part of a cross-border group maintaining a "working relationship." Other participants are Mr. Cabeza de Vaca, Mr. Hernández, U.S. Attorney General Arturo Gonzales and Gov. Rick Perry.
