Puerto Vallarta - With Christmas just around the corner, last night's Holiday Boutique Benefit for Biblioteca Higuera was a big hit, offering savvy shoppers a jump-start on their Christmas shopping lists.

Christmas shopping doesn't have to be all hustle and bustle, and those who took the short trip to Pitillal last night found the Holiday Boutique Benefit at Biblioteca Higuera to be right up their (shopping!) street.

Soft harp music soothed as shoppers wandered around Sally Conley's little library searching for that perfect gift. A variety of Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers, ranging from artfully carved soap sculptures to colorful art prints by talented local artist Judith Ewing-Morlan, offered deals that tempted even the most "Scrooge-like" budgets.

Delicious "Tapas" prepared by Chef Marta Huantes-Robles and a cash bar with drinks cheerfully mixed by Joe Thompson added to the enchantingly festive atmosphere of Sally Conley's magical library, Biblioteca de la Higuera, where Sally introduces the joys of reading to the children of Pitillal.

All of the proceeds from last night's Holiday Boutique Benefit will go towards covering some of the day-to-day expenses that are necessary for Sally Conley to keep her little children's library alive.

"Reading purely for pleasure hasn’t always been encouraged in Mexico and I wanted to create an environment where children could learn to love to read," says Sally. So, in June of 2001 Sally, a former literary agent, opened "Biblioteca de la Higuera," a free-flowing library filled with children’s books, computers, chess boards, and tables and chairs where children can read aloud to attentive adults, one-on-one.

"There is a statue in front of the Biblioteca de los Mangos, and the legend underneath sums it all up for me. The legend reads:'Un Niño, Un Libro, Un Futuro.' That about says it all," says Sally.

Biblioteca de la Higuera not only introduces our children to the joys of reading, but also encourages the children of Pitillal to explore the joys of learning through creative activity, assisted by adult volunteers.

On one side of the central courtyard, tables and chairs are scattered throughout the gardens so that children can paint and work with art and craft supplies under the guidance of volunteer artists.

The children's cheerful drawings, colorful paintings and other creative works that are on display throughout the library and the gardens not only keep the surroundings alive with color - but they are also proof-positive that Sally is instilling the love of learning in the little boys and girls of Pitillal.

Biblioteca de la Higuera is open to children every Monday and Thursday from noon till 2 pm. Volunteers are welcome and donations are gratefully accepted.
