A Great Blend: Viajeros Café and Café Sabroso

Kate and David Cope prepare the day's menu.
Tucked away in the garden of the Hikuri Gallery is La Cruz's newest restaurant. Owners Kate and David Cope have created Viajeros Café, featuring home baked pastries, organic shade-grown coffee, espresso drinks and delicious breakfasts. Breakfast hours are Monday - Friday, 8 to noon, PV time. Saturday brunch is served from 9 to 1, PV time.

The breakfast menu is always posted on the blackboard and varies to allow the chefs to use the freshest of ingredients. Typical offerings include breakfast burritos, chilequiles, eggs served to order and delicious homemade cinnamon rolls.

David and Kate are recent arrivals to the area but are no strangers to great cooking. Kate has been a private chef both on land and at sea and has run her own catering business. David is a professional baker, having worked at top restaurants in Maui and San Francisco. Together they have run kitchens at a fishing lodge in Alaska and an eco-lodge in Costa Rica.

Both Kate and David love to surf. On one surfing trip, David stayed in La Cruz and loved the area. When they decided to try their hand at operating their own restaurant, La Cruz was high on their list. As it turned out, the owners of the Hikuri Gallery needed someone to run a restaurant in their courtyard.

As well as serving breakfast, David and Kate sell their own blend of coffee called Café Sabroso. David recently attended the International Coffee Convention in Mexico City. There he met many coffee growers and chose the blend of organic, shade-grown coffee now called Café Sabroso. It is available in the restaurant and in bulk to take home. The cinnamon rolls and other baked goods are also available to go.

Viajeros Café also does catering of special events and parties at the Hikuri Gallery. A recent grand opening party showcased the beautiful setting and Kate and David's excellent tapas menu and fabulous desserts. They can arrange the menu of your choice and plan a perfect party for your special occasion.

Plans are for the restaurant to be open from early November to early May. David and Kate hope to spend their summers at their "little piece of paradise", a trailer in the Baja near a great surf spot.
