Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club Tennis Director Martin Parra announced on Tuesday at Los Alcatrales restaurant the resort's 21st Annual Pro-Am Tournament which will be held from January 23 - January 28, 2006. There will be 24 doubles teams with an amateur playing with a local tennis professional competing for the prestigious first prize. The amateur is generally sponsored by a local business and the cost to enter the Pro-Am is 1200 pesos. Currently there are many amateurs already registered, but one can still get in, and of course could pay to sponsor the team themselves.

The professionals will be competing for a total prize purse of 5000 pesos, while their amateur partners will compete for the glory. In the past many of Mexico's best professionals and Davis Cup players competed and this year will have the best local Puerto Vallarta pros. The winner will earn 1200 pesos, while the losing finalist will take home 800 pesos. Every entrant that wins at least one match will earn a part of the total purse.

Included in the event is singles competition as well, with Open (men's and women's combined), players in A, B, C and D categories. For those that play in the Pro-Am there will be no additional cost. The cost for the singles tournament is 200 pesos, which also includes lunch. There is no cap on the amount of entries in the singles competition. The "A" division and "C" division will have the most players and most difficult draws.

The "A" division will be a wide open field, with winners of local tournaments in 2005 all competing. The draws will be announced after the deadline for registration on January 20th. Yan Welffens won the most recent "A" tournament at the Los Tules event, finalist Emile Larrivee, who won previously at the Westin, will be competing as well as 15 year old Sergio Martinez who recently won at the Holiday Inn. Also expected to compete for the "A" title are Duncan Forbes and Raul Lopez of Puerto Vallarta. Long time winter resident Kosmas Mamadopoulos, the top ranked 55+ year old player in Greece could be installed as an early favorite, especially if he plays on clay.

The top seeded professionals are, #1 Samuel Sanchez, #2 Pedro Rodriguez, #3 Dany Niño and #4 Jorge Paelayo. Other pros competing will be Canto Del Sol Tennis Director Martin Parra, who made a New Years resolution to play more tennis this year, along with Canto Del Sol teaching pro Polo Torres. The Westin's popular tennis pro Norberto Aguirre and the Holiday Inn pro Rafael Castillon will also compete.

The Pro-Am will be played on the hard courts and the singles will utilize both the hard surface and clay. Expected are about 120 competitors.

For more information or to enter, contact the Canto Del Sol at 226-0123, extension 4187 or ask the operator for the tennis courts. One can also sign up in person at the tennis club at any time before the January 20th deadline.
