Peter Wells Scott - In Memoriam of
Richard Kaplan
Richard Kaplan, "The Mayor of Margaritaville," was called to be an entertainer for God on December 31, 2005. His smiles, music, larger than life personality and love for Vallarta and the people here will be greatly missed.

Richard was born on April 29, 1939 in Des Plaines, Illinois. He grew up in Des Plaines, where he attended high school and was a statewide wrestling champion in the heavyweight class.

After high school, Richard enlisted in the army and was stationed in Germany. While there he worked as journalist and photographer. Upon leaving the army, Richard moved to New York, where he worked as an editor for "Women's Wear Daily."

But throughout his life, Richard's first love was entertaining; playing his songs and telling his stories. In the 1970's Richard moved to Puerto Vallarta, where he spent many years working at the Playa de Oro Hotel, where thousands enjoyed his nightly show.

During the day, Richard had a real estate office in the Marina, which was always an active place with friends, tourists and clients stopping by to say "Hello." When not in the office he could be seen driving around town in his little turquoise runabout, which was some 30 years old, and had been around "almost as long as Richard."

Richard loved to make people happy, loved to celebrate, and he certainly earned his name and reputation as our "Mayor of Margaritaville." Vallarta has lost a friend of long standing - Vaya con Dios, Richard, we will hear your songs from Heaven.
