Festival Nautico Catch and Release Fishing Tournament
email this pageprint this pageemail usKathy Taylor - PVNN

A part of the month-long Festival Nautico, the Banderas Bay Catch and Release Fishing Tournament will be taking place at the newly opened Opequimar Yacht Club in Marina Vallarta on March 25th, 2006 from 7 am to 5 pm.
Puerto Vallarta - "They ALL got away..." That's the rule for the Banderas Bay Catch and Release Fishing Tournament to be held on March 25th, 2006. This tournament, part of Festival Nautico's month long tribute to Banderas Bay, will exemplify the intent of the Festival, which is to "bring people together to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Banderas Bay and its people, while working to ensure the long term health of the Bay, its estuaries and our children."

One of the major activities in the waters of Banderas Bay is recreational fishing, a venture that is a significant contributor to the economy of Puerto Vallarta and surrounding communities.

Most major fishing tour operators in Puerto Vallarta offer "catch and release" fishing opportunities, and some offer only that - it is in the industry's best interest to maintain the fish population of Banderas Bay.

Competitors will fish for sailfish only, and will be required to use only "barbless" or round hooks, monofilament line up to 30 pound test, and a maximum of 100 pound leader on each line. Observers on each boat will time each catch and record with digital photography.

This one day tournament will take place from 7 in the morning till 5 in the afternoon, and note that the organizers will not consider any entries received after 5 pm SHARP. The prizes will be awarded at 5:30 at the newly opened Opequimar Yacht Club in Marina Vallarta.

The prizes are significant - the first place winner will receive a 50% discount on the entry to this fall's prestigious 51st International Puerto Vallarta Sailfish and Marlin Tournament. Last year's entry fee per line was $14,000 pesos; first place sailfish winner received a Mercedes, and other vehicles and major prizes were awarded in each of the other categories as well. The second and third place winners will also receive discounts on the 51st Annual Tournament, and prizes will be presented to the rest of the top ten entrants.
