Canto Del Sol Tennis Director Martin Parra and hotel dignitaries will be awarding the winners at courtside on the final day of play on April 29th.
The Copa Pipi's X Pro-Am Tennis Tournament will be held at the Canto Del Sol beginning Monday, April 24th and will conclude on April 29th. The 10th Annual Pipi's event has been much anticipated and due to conflicts with scheduling, the tournament is being held two weeks later than first announced. Pipi's Restaurant is a popular local and tourist establishment, and supporters of tennis. Coming on the heels of a recent Pro-Am at the popular tennis resort, this event promises competitive tennis at all levels of play.

The Pro-Am will be played in a different format than in recent events; this being a qualifier with four teams playing round robin in four divisions. The four winning teams from each division will play in the semi final round, with the winners of the semis playing in the final and highlight match of the tournament. The purse for the Pro-Am will be 5000 pesos; with only the professional allowed to claim. The amateur partner will receive a trophy and the bragging rights that come with it. Pedro Rodriguez, winner of the recent Pro-Am will be changing partners and will play with Pipi's owner Ruben Fregoso.

There will also be a AA or professional singles division in this one, with the pros competing for a purse of 5000 pesos. Players are expected to come from Guadalajara and Tepic, and other cities, as well as top professionals from Puerto Vallarta. Rodriguez is looking for a possible double-double as he is entered in the Pro-Am as well as the AA pro division.

Other divisions will be the "A", or top amateur division which is perhaps as competitive as Puerto Vallarta tennis has been in years. Yan Welffens is coming off a layoff after capturing three consecutive titles in his most recent outings, putting him on top of the Puerto Vallarta tennis community. Many players will look to unseat him, and there are at least six local "A" players with the ability to do just that. Keep an eye on Duncan Forbes, Emile Larrivee, Sergio and Roberto Martinez; the possible champion might come fro that group.

The other divisions are the "B" and "C" as well as a kids division, which will be classified as "D". The "C" players will undoubtedly have the largest draw and this writer will once again compete in "C", attempting to break his maiden while attempting to capture a trophy. Singles play will begin on Monday and the Pro-Am will start on Tuesday.

The cost for entering the Po-Am will be 500 pesos, which is traditionally paid by the amateur partner. The entry for the singles tournament is 200 pesos and will include a commemorative tournament T-shirt and the hopes to win the hardware that comes to the finalists. Come out and play or come to enjoy the competition this week at the Canto Del Sol Resort and Racquet Club.
