An explosion at a clandestine fireworks shop in the border city of Ciudad Juarez on Wednesday killed a 29-year-old man and wounded seven other people as it blew out windows in a four-block area.

The business also housed a flower shop, and would reportedly send out deliveries of fireworks in trucks marked with the flower-shop logo.

The injured included an 8-year-old girl; most of the victims were reported in serious condition at local hospitals. The blast heavily damaged several homes.

The dead man was an employee of the shop, said Efren Matamoros, the director of civil defense for this city, located across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Clandestine fireworks production and sales are common in Mexico, and have caused many accidents in the past.

While the Mexican government grants permits and sets safety standards for such workshops, many operate clandestinely in heavily populated areas.
