For some great reading this summer, pick up David Angsten's Dark Gold. Set in and around Puerto Vallarta, this excellent novel is difficult to quantify: part mystery, part travelogue, part historical novel, part horror yarn, and all thriller.

Jack Duran embarks on a mission to Mexico in search of his incommunicado brother, Dan with his college buddies Rock and Duff in tow. Following a trail of shady dealings, they soon discover that Dan was searching for an ancient shipwreck laden with gland the race to recover the treasure begins.

Blinded by the prospect of ancient gold, they begin diving towards the shipwreck. Only, one by one, the divers begin to disappear. Tension mounts when Jack witnesses a mysterious, and ghastly, sea creature who seems to be guarding the wrecked Diablo Blanco deadly local legend of mythic proportion.

A fast-paced, high adventure thriller reminiscent of The Deep and The Beach, Dark Gold is an exciting tale of ancient gold, a deadly local legend, and a mythic creature who threatens everyone's survival.

From The Critics:

Publishers Weekly: Take a quest to find a lost brother, hot sex with incredibly beautiful babes, a giant man-eating beast that may or may not be a god, a sunken ship and a fortune in gold. Throw in some evil, demented villagers and a pirate or two, place these plot elements into the hands of a stylish, intelligent writer, and you've got yourself a page-turner that will take readers back to the days when a good book meant you stayed up all night under the covers with a flashlight ...

Kirkus Reviews: Sunken gold, black magic, sea monsters, a beautiful Brazilian in a bikini - what more could you want from a summer thriller?

Reader Review: Grab a salt-rimmed, slushy-cold Margarita, crank up the Gypsy Kings on your IPOD, rub coconut oil all over your office-tan, weary body, and park yourself on a hot beach with David Angsten's DARK GOLD, and you'll be transported into one of those sensuous, toes-in-the-sand summers that stretch out forever, back to when we were old enough to know better and young enough not to care. And it all comes guilt-free, because Angsten's prose is smart, stylish, and literary. College boys in search of a lost brother, yachts, babes, treasure maps, myths and monster: if you only have time to read one book on your vacation - or if you need a book to make you feel like you're on vacation - it's this one. I'd read anything else by this guy, can't wait for the next.

Reader Review: I only bought this book because the gaudy cover promised a trashy poolside read. But I was pleasantly surprised to find an engrossing mystery-cum-adventure. The thing I liked best was that every time I "knew" what was going to happen next, the author surprised me with an unexpected twist. The jacket says the author lives in L.A. so I suspect this either started out as, or is meant to become, an adventure movie screenplay (how's that for stereotyping). For summer reading that's just what I want - a story that keeps moving and keeps me turning the pages.

The author of DARK GOLD, David Angsten is a senior story analyst and editor for AEI, a Los Angeles literary management and motion picture production company. He also works as a screenwriter and director. Published by Thomas Dunne Books, his novel, Dark Gold, can be purchased at most book stores and from Amazon.com or BarnesAndNoble.com.
