Hugo Solario has his hand raised in victory after a 53 second KO in the first round. Look for Hugo to try the professional ranks soon.

The kids exhibition was fought to a draw. It is amazing to watch the discipline and ring presence of the youngsters.

The six year old kids were crowd pleasers as usual. Here they prepare for their bout peforming ancient Muay Thai traditional routines.

Despite having the flu, ring referee Armando Tapia called all ten bouts, lasting four hours. Tapia is a regular referee and can be seen at most Muay Thai events in Puerto Vallarta.

There was also some clowning around as a boxer entertained the crowd inside the huge costume in between fights.

Yes, and there were three stylish Americans at the fights as well. From left to right from Florida is Kayla, her boyfriend Taylor and his Mom Sueanne.
Another exciting Muay Thai card was held at the Collage Club Saturday night by Carlos Solario, owner of Lanna Gym in Puerto Vallarta. The four hour event featured ten bouts, which included two professional fights and eight amateur contests. One contest was a women’s bout and another was a 6 year old exhibition which delighted the crowd.

The main event pitted Lanna Gym fighter Ernesto “Finito” Valdez against Refugio “Tigre” Lemus, the owner and maestro of the Lemus Thai Center in Guadalajara. The fight was a contrast of experience and skill against youth and strength. Lemus, ten years the elder started the five round bout with some unique and effective attack methods which appeared to confuse Valdez, but the younger fighter got stronger and more effective after the second round.

The stronger Valdez waited out the assault and took control of the fight in the third round, as Lemus appeared to tire after two rounds of nonstop action. Lemus tired and crisp and hard Valdez kicks and punches put the Guadalajara fighter in trouble beginning the 4th round. Midway through that round “Finito” began an assault which sent Lemus to the canvas and he couldn’t muster the energy to get up. The bout was ruled a KO for the Vallarta fighter late in the 4th round.

In the undercard, Lanna Gym’s Jorge Estrada battled Antonio “Finito” Alavarado from KML Pinsinchai Irapuato in another five round fight. Estrada appeared to be in better shape, but the determined Alvarado was the more determined fighter and won a close unanimous decision. The name “Finito” was a winner in both professional bouts and we might soon see others changing their fight names in the near future.

The two 6 year olds delighted the crowd with their ring savvy and amazing discipline in the two round exhibition. David Mejia of Lanna Gym and Jose “Rayito” Uribe of Tanai Luark Gym in Puerto Vallarta, although lacking in strength, were clearly not lacking in technique. They provided the crowd on hand a traditional pre fight Muay Thai ceremony which pays respect to the sport. Of course, the result was a draw, as is the case when all youngster put on an exhibition.

Other amateur results were as follows:

Guillermo “Willy” Estrada of Tania Luark knocked out Lanna Gym’s Jose “Zurdo” Flores in the opening bout with a knockout after landing 12 consecutive knees in his corner at only 1:03 of the opening round.

Ricardo Rodriguez of Lanna and David “El Azteca” Mota of Tanai battled to a three round draw.

Francisco Perez of KML won a unanimous decision over Miguel “Miki” Carreon of Lanna. Perez piled up the points with crisp kicks and a multitude of effective punches.

Lanna finally won its first amateur event of the evening as Alejandro “Lobo” Carrillo took a unanimous decision from Rigoberto Murguia of Tania.

The women followed with Ana Isabel Gabilan of Guadalajara earning a close decision over Paola Sanchez of Lanna Gym.

Carlos Villaseñor of Lanna defeated Refugio Gonzales of KML.

Hugo Solario, the 18 year old brother of Carlos Solario was placed in the marquee amateur bout against Ricardo Moreno of Lemus Gym in Guadalajara. The intense and intelligent fighter knocked out Moreno only 53 seconds into the fight. It will not be long before Hugo turns professional; his unbeaten streak against amateurs is getting long.

At close to midnight, another successful Muay Thai card promoted by Carlos Solario came to an end, sending fans home content. The gym totals were very even. Lanna was 4-4-2, fighting in each bout. KML was 2-1, Tanai was 1-1-2 and Lemus was 1-2. The next Muy Thai extravaganza is set for October at the Collage Club; a terrific venue for the fights.
