Double Champions Boxing Report From Collage Club
email this pageprint this pageemail usBob Cohen - PVNN

"Explosive" Trejo of Puerto Vallarta displays his many championship belts after winning the Flyweight title in a 10 round TKO.

Trejo and Zepeda in action in the Flyweight title fight.

In the main event Iran Rodriguez of Puerto Vallarta and Panchito Sierra of Tepic are measuring each other, looking for an opening to land a big punch.

Sierra's hand rasied in victory after the explosive and surprising TKO in the 7th round over Iran Rodriguez in the main event. Needless to say the crowd was booing the decision to stop the fight and we expect yet another rematch between the two fighters.

All the celebraties are pictured here; the legendary Dr. Alfonso Morales as well as the beauties that competed in "Señorita Ring."
At least 100 people were waiting in line prior to the 7:00 PM opening of the Collage Club Saturday night, as Javier Leon Productions put on a boxing card that included five professional bouts and nine amateur fights. The dual main events were title fights and by the time the amateur bouts had ended, it was standing room only at the Collage; with well over 1000 in attendance.

The main event was a 12 round revenge match between Puerto Vallarta's Iran Rodriguez and Panchito Sierra of Tepic. In their last fight Sierra defeated the popular PV fighter in a disputed decision that included poor sportsmanship by the Tepic fighter. The match was also and more importantly for the Cruiserweight Championship of the Americas, a title that includes Mexico, the United States and Canada.

The co main event was another 12 round title bout, but for the little guys; the Flyweight division, with a weight limit of 50 kilos or 110 pounds. Puerto Vallarta's Explosivo Trejo defended his title of "World Champion of the Hispanics" against La Mosca Zepeda, fighting out of Guadalajara. Javier Leon also manages both Vallarta fighters, along with his duties as promoter of the event.

And promoting he did for the entire six hour card that ended at 1:00 AM. After the nine amateur fights the five professional fights were taped for television and included an interview with the "Legendary Mexican Fight Doctor Alfonso Morales." Dr. Morales also did live commentary for the two championship bouts. His long career has taken him around the world and is considered one of the most respected men in the fight game.

Also, eight beautiful local women competed to be the "Señorita Ring" designee. The women represented Puerto Vallarta businesses and paraded around the ring for hours, carrying the round cards, assisting in handing out the belts and congratulating the winners. The crowd voted before the final bout after examining the beauties for hours. The two finalists were Miss Punta Realty and Miss Telecable. In a close vote of cheers, Miss Telecable was voted "Señorita Ring" and was awarded a 2000 peso prize.

The flyweights put on nonstop action, with over 150 punches thrown in almost every round. Mexican boxers are known for their toughness and ability to take barrages of punches and Trejo and Zepeda were no exceptions. Because these fighters were small did not mean that they punched softly; their exchanges were explosive and powerful. Puerto Vallarta champion Explosivo Trejo was punching from the opening bell and won the first two rounds; the third round a draw. Then Trejo took over for the remaining rounds, throwing jabs, hooks and almost every type of punch in boxing. The brand new ring cover proved to be dangerous; the surface became extremely slippery with the sweat of the fighters and footing was difficult at times.

Even with extremely powerful punches by Trejo, Zepeda was barely jolted at all, but as the fight reached the 8th round, the Guadalajara fighter appeared to be disoriented and not returning any punches. He lasted the 9th round on pure guts and instinct. The referee called the bout a TKO late in the tenth round as there was still no response to Trejo's brutal assault; a great call to prevent injury. It was a valiant effort by Zepeda but his lack of any response was the cause of the stoppage.

In the main event, Rodriguez and Sierra fought a totally different fight from the beginning, measuring each other carefully. Rodriguez got the initial punches off, but was well countered by Sierra. The Tepic fighter won a close opening round, the 2nd round was even. A late flurry in the 3rd round by the popular Vallarta fighter evened the bout. The following two rounds provided virtually no action, with both fighters looking carefully for openings. The sixth round provided a bit more action and the bout was virtually even. Then came the 7th round and if one turned their head they missed the brutal combination by Sierra that both battered and dazed Iran Rodriguez. He was so disoriented that the referee called the fight immediately, which led to yet another controversial decision by the two rivals. The quick stoppage was questionable but it is good to see that fight officials are looking out for the safety of boxers.

Results of the three professional bouts that preceded the dual main event:

In a four round Super Lightweight fight, Puerto Vallarta's Marco "Texano" Nazareth fought a very close fight against Edgar "El Caballo" Valencia of Tepic. The results came back as a split decision victory for "Texano" in an entertaining opening bout.

The next fight up was in the Super Featherweight division and pitted Adan "Ojitos" Gamboa of Puerto Vallarta against Jose Manuel Osorio, fighting out of Guadalajara. Osorio was solid the whole fight, showing both strength and good fighting ability and won an easy six round decision.

The last fight prior to the main events pitted popular Puerto Vallarta boxer Christian Valverde against a late replacement opponent, Coyote Lozana from Guadalajara in a Super Welterweight bout. The taller and more experienced Valverde dominated the first round and then won the fight with a second round TKO.

The nine amateur exhibitions were all three rounds and protective head gear was worn by all boxers. The quality of the matches was quite impressive, especially the ring presence that was exhibited by the youngsters. The youngest fighters were 5 - 7 years old and fought in two bouts. The other fights ranged in age from 10 years old to 16 -18 years of age. One never knows who the next Chavez, Morales or Barrera might be and there is a possibility that one could come out of Saturday's fight card. The only negative of the night was the slippery new ring cover which caused many slips and poor footing and needs some work before the next event. The night was a huge success for Javier Leon, the Collage Club and all participants involved. The fans were the biggest winners, enjoying a long night of boxing.
