BanderasNews food writer, restaurant reviewer Gary R. Beck, pays a visit to Casa Naranjo. Located at 263 Naranjo on the South Side of Vallarta, this orange-themed restaurant joins the ranks of gourmet restaurants that are springing up on every corner in Colonia Emiliano Zapata.

Casa Naranjo owner Andres Espinoza, on the advice of his good friend Chef Thierry Blouet, changed his printing company and copy store into a modern, upscale, yet casual restaurant with an open kitchen that delivers an ever-changing menu with an accent on the flavor of oranges [naranjo].

Many dishes have orange flavors but are not overbearing. Arrangements, vases and murals decorate with an orange fruit motif decorate the white walls. Consider sharing an ample shrimp salad with spinach and orange with a tasty tangy dressing and a bowl of cold orange soup, unusual but refreshing.

Main courses include a beautifully presented huachinango in an orange pine nut crust with fresh basil sauce. The combination of basil, sweet fish meat, crunchy nut and tangy citrus orange.

Also delicious is the chicken breast stuffed with squash blossoms and ricotta cheese. This dish sparkled with the creamy cheese complimenting the chicken accented by the delicate yet earthy flavor of the blossoms.

Also impressive are giant butterflied shrimp with spinach ravioli in thyme sauce and the pork chop with portobello mushrooms. For dessert, the chef took a chocolate almond light puff pastry and topped it with strawberry sauce, another good and sound combination of flavors.

Open from 5:30 to 11:30 pm, Casa Naranjo is located on the South Side of Vallarta at 263 Naranjo on the corner of Lázaro Cárdenas. A/C. Credit Cards accepted. Reservations advised. For more information or to make your reservations visit casa-naranjo.com or call 222-3518.
