TexMex took on a whole new meaning at the Marival Grand & Club Suites in Nuevo Vallarta. A recent cooperative promotion between the Marival, Funjet Vacations and Dallas-area restaurant Love & War in Texas brought plenty of Texas traditions to the resort.

"Texas Week in Vallarta was a rip-roarin' success," declared Marival activity director Reggie Paulk, from under his oversized foam cowboy hat. All the animation staff was decked out in cowboy hats and vests to add to the Texas flavor.

Speaking of flavor, guests were wowed by the Texas food. The menus were designed by chefs from Love & War in Texas featuring many regional specialties. Well-known dishes like smoked BBQ ribs, brisket and burgers were served alongside quail in jalapeno sauce, grilled Texas coastal fish and pepper poppers.

Paulk's staff kept things hopping with daily activities. Saturday's rib eating contest drew entrants from Idaho, Canada and Michigan. Elliot from Detroit won the event just before getting ready for his wedding to fiancée Taleaka, which was held on the Marival's beach.

A daily horseshoe pitching match was won by Rudy, from Peterboro, Ontario. The crowd favorite was the nightly dancing to the Texas sounds of Chip Bricker and the Gang.

Molly Blackmon, FunJet sales manager, taught Texas Two Step Dance lessons. "A couple from New York exclaimed that they were so excited about learning how to do the Texas two-step!" said Blackmon. "The husband said he was impressed that I could teach a boy from the Bronx how to dance like a Texan."

Jeremy and Leah Smith, honeymooners from Paris, Texas won Saturday night's Texas Two Step dance competition and were rewarded with a free vacation at the Marival. "I am thrilled," exclaimed Leah, "We'll be back this winter to see the whales here in Vallarta."

"The buzz around the pool was that guests hoped that this event will be repeated next year," said FunJet rep Blackmon. "Guests from New York and Canada enjoyed the fun as much as the Texans did." Blackmon hinted that Funjet, Marival and Love & War are already in talks to repeat the event for a whole month next fall.
