For information and registration locally, call the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club at 224-0123, extension 4187 or 4287. One can also register in Guadalajara at 01-333-823-0031, the home of the Jalisco branch of the Federation of Mexican Tennis or visit their website at www.amtp.com.mx for more information.
Martin Parra, Tennis Director of the Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club announced that the Primera Copa Pacifico Vallarta will be played beginning December 4th and commencing December 9th, 2006.

The tournament will have the best professional tennis players in Mexico competing for $50,000 pesos, an extremely large purse for a Mexican tournament. The winner will take home $16,000 pesos along with valuable points to improve their ranking worldwide and in Mexico.

The tournament will also include amateur singles competition in the "A", "B", "C", and "D" categories and a large draw for the amateur tournament is expected due to both the high profile event as well as the many tourists and winter tennis players that reside in Vallarta in the winter months.

The Copa Pacifico will have a field of 24 professionals, 12 of which will be direct entries based on their National rankings, eight wild card berths and four qualifiers. Any player that participates will win a minimum of $500 pesos for just playing in the main draw and the payoffs rise geometrically form there. Any quarterfinalist will earn $2000 pesos, $4000 pesos for making the semifinals and the finalist will earn $8000 pesos; the winner receiving double that.

Typical professional tournaments in Mexico have total purses starting at $5000 - $15,000 pesos, but due to promoting and marketing by Parra, the Canto Del Sol was able to land a purse of $50,000 pesos in just its inaugural event.

With the size of the purse and another large tournament following in Manzanillo, fans should expect the very best tennis pros to compete and all direct entries will come from cities outside of Puerto Vallarta, from every part of Mexico. Most likely, local pros Norberto Aguirre and Polo Torres will receive wild card berths and possibly another local player will get a wild card berth. As for the four qualifiers, this is a most difficult task. Each player will have to win two matches against top competition to just reach the main draw and then face the top four seeds in the first round, making it extremely hard to win in the first round.

Spectators, which are expected to fill the thousand seats at the Canto Del Sol, will be treated to the finest and most competitive tennis action Vallarta has seen. A very large contingent will be making the trip from Guadalajara and Tepic to play in both the professional and amateur events. Full draws of 32 participants are expected for each amateur category and there will be qualifying matches if that number is exceeded.

The deadline for entries is December 1st and the cost to enter is $300 pesos.

Come out and join tennis fans and players to participate or watch the event!
