Mexico's Leftist Leader Vows to Register 5 Million Supporters of His Parallel Government Associated Press
| Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador | The parallel government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador vowed last week to register 5 million supporters as its representatives who would help the fiery leftist undermine President Felipe Calderon's administration.
Lopez Obrador, who narrowly lost the July presidential election, set up the parallel government and declared himself Mexico's “legitimate” leader after staging massive protests that blocked the capital for seven weeks last summer.
So far, his government's members have largely dedicated themselves to holding news conferences to criticize Calderon.
Gustavo Iruegas, the parallel government's “foreign secretary,” said Lopez Obrador's government had set up booths where supporters could get their photo taken for a credential declaring them as representatives.
Iruegas said they hoped to accredit 5 million supporters both in and outside Mexico. The representatives would form the support base for Lopez Obrador to carry out his civil movement.
Lopez Obrador, who hosts a TV program after midnight on Tuesdays to air his message, has said he will start traveling internationally to gather support for his parallel government. |
