Canto Del Sol Tennis Club Announces 22nd Annual Copa Pro-Am

Martin Parra announces the Pro Am and will also be in action in the event.

Last year's champions, Pedro Martinez and Raul Mesa will not be able to repeat; they will be on opposing teams.
Canto Del Sol Tennis Director Martin Parra announced the 22nd Annual Copa Pro-Am will be played on the courts of the tennis club beginning Tuesday, February 6th and concluding on Saturday, February 10th, with a buffet at the final banquet where trophies and cash prizes will be awarded. The draw for the Pro-Am will be at 5:00 PM on Monday.

The popular annual event will feature as many as 24 teams, one with a top local professional teamed with the sponsoring amateur partner. The two teams that reach the final will be playing for 7500 pesos, with 5000 pesos going to the champion. The cost to enter is 1200 pesos per team. The professional gets the cash prize and the amateur playing partner gets the glory and trophy.

Some sponsors that were first to register are Pipi's Restaurant, Tsunami Restaurant, CMQ Hospital and Le Gourmet among others.

Last year's winner were the team of Pedro Martinez and Dr. Raul Mesa in a thrilling victory over Emile Larrivee and Yan Welffens. Welffens departed the Vallarta area to accept a job with the Westin resorts in Malaysia, so Emile will have to find a new playing partner. Mesa will also need to find a new pro partner as Pipi's Ruben Fregoso appears to have Martinez locked in as his partner.

Parra stated that parity is important in a Pro-Am event, and is his job to see that the stronger pros play with the weaker amateurs. Most amateurs that play in the event will be "B" rated or better, so competition proves to be fierce.

The singles component of the tournament will begin on Monday, a day before the Pro-Am begins. The categories will be "A", "B", "C" and "D". The "D" category is for kids and beginners. The cost to enter the singles only event is 200 pesos. Amateurs that are already entered in the Pro-Am will incur no additional cost.

The "A" division will be a wide open competition as local players try once again to show Puerto Vallarta they are the best amateurs in town. The field this year will have a multitude of past "A" tournament winners. Emile Larrivee won the "A" crown in the last tournament played in Puerto Vallarta and could be the top seed. Others that have won before and are expected to compete are Sergio and Roberto Martinez, Jorge Joya, Duncan Forbes, Aramando Said, Raul Mesa, among others. Last year, a tourist from Seattle, Mike Roberts, in town for a week finished second to Welffens.

The "B" and "C" divisions always provide competitive play and a note to players; please don't play down a division in order to attempt to steal a trophy. If one is a "B" player, compete within your division in the tournament. In Mexico, you will be called a "coyote" but not punished if you violate the request.

To register, call the Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club at 226-0123 at extension 4187 or 4287, or stop by the club to register. Join the 100+ players in a week of exciting and competitive tennis.
