El Financiero Launches Chinese Edition

A Mexican financial newspaper has launched a Mandarin Chinese version of its online edition in a bid to meet demand for local news from a growing Chinese community doing business here.

El Financiero's Mandarin version has been live for two weeks, according to Enrique Quevedo, head of electronic media at the Mexico City-based daily.

El Financiero plans to boost advertising for its new service with help from the Chinese Embassy in Mexico, during celebrations for the Chinese New Year later this month.

"The idea of launching a Mandarin version was to give a service to the Chinese community in Mexico, or to Chinese interested in doing business with Mexico," said Quevedo.

Mexico's so-called China Town - comprised of just one street near the capital's downtown mostly lined with food shops and restaurants - stages a festival every February with banners, lanterns and dragon dances welcoming the New Year.

China has leapfrogged Mexico to become the No. 2 trading partner of the United States after Canada, with Chinese imports flooding into Mexico too.

Ideas, a new Mexican furniture and accessories store similar to Swedish giant IKEA, buys most of its products from China.

Figurines of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a beloved national religious Mexican icon sold in street fairs and outside churches, are also often produced in the Asian powerhouse.
