Pueblo, Colorado - A 23-year-old woman has been arrested by the police for alleged trafficking in children after she was found to have given her five-month-old baby to a couple in exchange for money.

The woman, Nicole Uribe, has been held on charges of felony trafficking in children for her alleged act of giving the child to the couple, Jose-Juan Lerma, 47, and his wife, Irene, 27, who were also arrested on the same charges for accepting the baby in trade.

The three are Mexican nationals are being held with a $50,000 bond. The baby has been taken into state custody. The police acted on a tip-off.

The police said the deal was struck for $1,500 with $500 being a down payment, which Uribe advanced for a used Dodge Intrepid.

Jose-Juan Lerma later told a news channel that he acted with good intentions to help Uribe, an unemployed Mexican mother, and her baby.

The court papers indicated that Uribe and her boyfriend, Justin Hines, were staying with the Lermas about a week ago after they were told to vacate an apartment rented by Hines' sister, Deanna Ramirez. Ramirez told police she had to ask them to leave as Hines was a drug addict.

Pueblo police said Ramirez and Hines' mother, Jody Charter, had informed them about Uribe trying to sell the baby, a boy.

Lerma said Uribe offered to allow him and his wife to adopt her baby. He also claimed that he took them to Angelus Chapel Funeral Home in Pueblo for an adoption agreement to be notarized. However, the funeral home authorities refused the claim.

If found guilty, the Lermas and Uribe could each face between four and 12 years in the department of corrections and fines.
