Mexico Hopes to Develop Constructive Ties with Cuba

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said on Wednesday that his country wants to develop constructive relations with Cuba in efforts to boost the friendship between the two countries.

In an interview with Mexican television network Televisa, Calderon said he hoped to establish a constructive relationship with Cuban leaders Fidel Castro and Raul Castro so as to promote bilateral relations.

He said he had asked to be allowed to travel to Havana to visit Castro, who is recovering from illness, and his request received a positive response from Cuban authorities, Calderon said.

However, Calderon said there were still a host of problems remaining to be solved between the two countries, including the repayment of a debt of 400 million U.S. dollars owed by the Cuban government to a Mexico bank.

He said the issue should be dealt with on the negotiating table between the two sides, which will be conducive to improvement of bilateral ties.

The Mexican government recalled its ambassador to Cuba in 2004 and also asked the Cuban ambassador to leave the country. Analysts say further efforts need to be made to put bilateral ties back on normal track again.
