Mexico Spends on Electronic Media
email this pageprint this pageemail usPrensa Latina

Nearly 70 percent of the Mexican political parties expenses in the presidential elections 2006 were used to buy time in the electronic media, affirmed a press report.

The Universal newspaper the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) said this expenditure represents 20 percent more than in the 2000 elections.

The president of Mexico's Federal Institute Luis Carlos Ugalde assured during the supervising process set in motion that every party showed errors in their presentation.

The agreements signed with 25 radio and TV enterprises to notify promotion contracts with candidates were only partially fulfilled since they were voluntarily and not compulsory.

IFE holds over 30 thousand discs loaded with two million hours of recordings that show payment of 757 thousand "spots" by political groups.

Of these, 250 thousand were not initially reported.
