Another Helping of Mama's Cooking
email this pageprint this pageemail usGary R. Beck - PVNN

Open every Tuesday through Sunday from 4-11 pm, Mama Dolores Diner is located at Olas Altas 534-B near Púlpito in Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone.
Serving home-style cooking that satisfies both ex-pats and homesick visitors, I just can't seem to stay away from Mama Dolores Diner. And I'm not the only one! Even though the restaurant has indoor seating for 20 and an outdoor awning covered and wrought iron enclosed sidewalk terrace with a capacity of 16, the place has been overflowing with Gringos since Grant Hunermund and Kieran Justason from Toronto, Canada took over this established café.

After my first several visits, I decided that the Mama's Fabulous meat loaf and fried chicken were my favorites, but then recently I had their full order BBQ pork ribs and it became my top choice.

I dined with a non-meat eater and she enjoyed the vegetarian lasagna covered with a rich sauce. On two lunch stops, I had a generous 1/3 pound beef burger with French fries; also offered are a chicken or shrimp burger, and the taco salad with a choice of chicken or beef, both tasty and plentiful to keep me trucking on the cobblestones during the afternoon.

Grant told me I must try their spaghetti and meat balls with Caesar salad and the whole huachinango [fresh local red snapper] with lime, garlic or Veracruzana. He later remarked that the secret for their fast success [took only six months] is good food at reasonable prices, friendly atmosphere and a bitchy drag queen!

The whole experience of dining in a relaxed environment brings visitors back during their stay and many locals find the eclectic South Side comfort inviting to frequent on a regular basis. How can you beat people-watching? Plus a small party can gather within minutes. Ah, Mama loves being a star!

Mama also serves up $10 peso beers and margaritas for just $20 pesos during the popular Happy Hour, daily from 4-7 pm. Be sure to stop by on Friday nights during high season to meet Mama D, a sight to be viewed!
