Grupo Sur - Working Together for Puerto Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usAdriana Romero - PVNN

A group of South Side Vallarta business owners and managers are working together to promote and protect the southern areas of Puerto Vallarta.
Grupo Sur, a concept created in November of 2006 by a group of Vallarta business owners and managers, is an organized effort to promote and protect the Southern areas of Puerto Vallarta - from Basilio Badillo to Las Juntas de los Veranos.

At a press conference held earlier this month at the Hotel Tropicana, Grupo Sur Director Norma Alicia Lynn, joined by representatives of several member companies, presented the progress the committee has made thus far, and announced new projects to be undertaken to develop a successful tourism strategy for the South Zone.

The press conference was presided over by Oscar Rivero, president of the Conventions and Visitors Bureau and the Tourism Board, Ludwig Estrada, representative of the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat, Enrique Tovar, as representative of the director of Municipal Tourism, and Wally Lobato, sub-chief of the Art and Culture Department.

Also in attendance at the conference were Luis Fitch, president of the Restaurant Association, and Alejandra Cornejo, the General Manager of the Tropicana Hotel, a member of the Grupo Sur.

Norma Lynn delivered an introductory speech before turning the floor over to Oscar Rivero, who talked about the importance of the South Side of Puerto Vallarta in the history of this world-renowned tourist destination, and also about the revenue generated by hotels and condominiums and the tendencies of the market.

In turn, Ludwig Estrada talked about Ecotourism and the consideration that must be given to rural development, since there have been a few risky, and poorly planned, projects taking place recently within the areas of Conchas Chinas, Punta Negra, Amapas, Mismaloya and Las Juntas y Los Veranos - areas of Puerto Vallarta that are vulnerable to immoderate growth and exploitation.

Enrique Tovar, the Under Director of Tourism for the municipality, mentioned the interest of the department to work with representatives of all the different zones in Puerto Vallarta.

Wally Lobato was the last to take the floor. He thanked Grupo Sur for the invitation and for their interest in promoting art and culture beyond the spaces where they are usually presented, and for bringing these advantages to the tourists who visit the Southern Zones of our beautiful city.

Everyone present had the opportunity to express their interests, concerns, and discuss ideas as to how everyone involved can work together as a team to find a respectful way of protecting the natural environment when it comes to planning Ecotourism and Real Estate developments and projects.

Norma Alicia Lynn expressed that so far they have received support from Vallarta's different private and governmental sectors, as well as a growing interest and involvement from the local community.

In closing, Norma Alicia Lynn said that the group's event calendar will be released as soon as all of the dates have been confirmed. She also announced that in September the first issue of "Zona Sur" will be published, a magazine aimed at both tourists and local readers.
