Calderón Seeks to Take Back the Streets
email this pageprint this pageemail usPresidency of the Republic

President Felipe Calderón
Speaking at the Mexican State Public Safety Board Meeting, President Felipe Calderón reminded his audience that one of his government’s main priorities is to fight crime. Consequently, he said, “The key to taking the next step in this battle is to increase both reliability and honesty, as well as the operating capacity of all the country’s police corps, at the local level.” Since impunity makes citizens vulnerable to criminals, combating and eliminating this scourge is one of Mexicans’ greatest challenges, a key issue on the national agenda and a high priority for all governors.

The federal government, the president explained, is determined to work closely with municipal and state governments, regardless of the party they belong to. Since the lack of safety and security on the streets is a decades-old problem, combating it will require time, money and even human lives.

The president went on to list some of the measures taken to reduce crime to date. First, his administration has taken steps to restore the state’s power; second, it is working to eliminate violence and impunity, as well as the corruption and illegalities that spawn this; third, the government is recovering the country’s public spaces and returning them to children and families; fourth, it is making every effort to restore people’s trust; and fifth, it wants citizens not only to take measures to prevent crime but also to play an active role in the prevention and treatment of addictions in children and young people in Mexico.

In this fight against the lack of safety and security on the streets, the president said, his administration will make every effort to guarantee the honesty and transparency of those responsible for public safety. He concluded by saying that nowadays, society and government must support police corps to prevent the power of organized crime from co-opting them and thereby damaging state institutions.
