A Celebration of Love, Music and Diversity

Puerto Vallarta - Reveille, the Tucson AZ. Gay Men's Chorus presented those fortunate enough to attend their June 6th show a celebration of love, music and diversity in a benefit concert for the new Vallarta HIV/AIDS Clinic.

The concert tour was aptly named "Beyond the Border, Mexico Tour 2007." I was struck immediately with the parallels here and worldwide: learning to accept other people for whatever they are and whatever their culture.

One of the first high points was a spirited African song of loss, "Tshotsholoza." Brightly colored sashes made the singers' black and white clothes take a wonderful bold direction accented by intense percussion. Then "Cross the Wide Missouri" positively enforced the future life ahead of all of us.

As the concert continued it became clear that humor was the chorus members' strength and forte. This is when the songs took on a new craziness and the appreciative crowd became frantically happy.

Golden oldies from the 1950's and 1960's, like "I Will Follow Him", "The Boy from Ipanema", "Secret Love", "Stand By Your Man" and "The Ten Commandments of Love," took on completely new meanings. Let me say, you just had to be there! Leave not before a salute to our local cuisine in "The Jalapeno Chorus" [Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.]

Muchas Gracias to everyone involved, and especially Brazilian born Artistic Director/Conductor/Singer/Dancer/Guitarist/Joker Linus Lerner! "Gracias a la Vida!"
