Environmental Day at Mayto Sea Turtle Camp

Regional Director of CONANP, Biol. Alberto Elton

UdG Preparatoria Principal and Turtle Camp General Manager, Dr. Armando Soltero
Some of the highest environmental authorities in Mexico gathered at the Mayto Sea Turtle Camp on International Environmental Day. The day started around noon when everyone in the small village of Mayto prepared for the speech.

The ceremony was conducted by Dr. Soltero, the principal of UdG Preparatoria and general manager of the camp. Among the honored guests were the regional director of CONANP, Biologist Alberto Elton; SEMARNAT-COSTA operations coordinator, Ing. Luis Adrian Perez; Costa Norte SEMADES Sub-delegate, Biol. Irma Griselda, and representing Mexico President C. Felipe Calderon, Sr. Jaime Bocanegra Gallegos, the Regional Manager of SEMARNAT, CONAFOR.

The speeches were brief and the heat was intense, so after breaking the ice, we proceeded to plant some trees to commemorate the day with more than just words, more than just speeches made from behind a desk.

And though we planted six trees to commemorate the day, in essence we have planted more than 45,000 trees over the past two years. At Mayto we have a greenhouse filled mainly with lumber resources, large trees, etc. This is to promote reforestation around the region, all the trees are free and when people get them we only ask them to take care of them and water them, these are very dry lands.

After planting the trees all of the visitors toured the Mayto Sea Turtle Camp, where great efforts are being made to study and help the 4 species of sea turtles that nest on these beaches.

The green house and turtle camp tours were guided by Biol. Israel Llamas, the biologist in charge of Mayto. Afterwards, guests were invited to Tehuamixtle for lunch and refreshments, and to discuss several issues regarding the lack of government support of all of these nature rescue programs.

Ariel Duenas is the Wild Life Coordinator for WILD TRAVELLERS and Global Volunteer Projects, and an active volunteer at several sea turtle camps around the Bay of Banderas. For more information, send an email to ariel@globalvolunteerprojects.org.
