Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The 16th annual Banderas Bay International Festival Nautico is expanding to an eight-day event. Last week, organizers announced the dates for the 2008 event: March 1-8.

Activities range from sailboat races on Banderas Bay and dinghy dashes in the protected inlets, to educational seminars at Vallarta Yacht Club and food festivals and live music in three marinas: Paradise Village, Marina Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta Marina.

Bahia Banderas (meaning "Flags Bay") provides moderate but consistent winds during March - conditions agreeable with many of the cruising class yachts that are outfitted more for long-term living on board, not for active racing.

Vallarta Yacht Club in the Nuevo Vallarta Inlet hosts the Old Fart Laser Races, awards ceremonies and other events that will be open to the public. Overnight cruises are held within the mostly sheltered waters of Banderas Bay.

"I've been sailing in everything from beer can races to international grand prix events for more than 30 years," said Alan Weaver of a previous Banderas Bay Festival, "and I've never had more fun than this." … "The people were terrific, the location and weather were fabulous, and most important, there was good competition without anyone getting worked up over the results."
