While the sun was burning hot in Vallarta and my mind was starting to think I couldn’t take one more day of sweat, I decided to head off to the mountains of San Sebastian. I have visited this lovely town before but just for a day trip, see I am kind of a hotel snob! I like to be spoiled when I am in a hotel, I like electricity, beautiful beds, and all the little amenities that make me feel like a queen.

On my previous trips I had checked out some of the more “rustic” hotels San Sebastian has to offer and was not too impressed. But on this trip, I decided to stay at a place I had heard of called La Galerita de San Sebastian.

I was so surprised to find this sanctuary behind town, the hotel consists of 3 large, stylish, comfortable with a touch of elegance wood cabins. I was sure this was just where I wanted to be to relax and cool off.

Although there are much cheaper places to stay in town, if your looking for a whole experience of relaxation and pampering (not just 2 beds and a sink,) this is worth every penny. The entire area is surrounded by mountains, and the grounds are filled with fruit and coffee trees, flowers and fountains.

The cabin itself had a king sized, thick & comfy futon style bed, high wood beamed ceilings, and a wonderful fire place in the middle of the room that separates the sleeping area from the sitting area. The bathroom was done in native rocks and equipped with a wonderfully hot & strong shower and a basket of goodies including a loofa.

A fridge, coffee maker, satellite TV, wireless internet and hot spiced apple cider and cookies made me feel right at home. I put on the thick bathrobe left for me then laid on my private patio surrounded by trees and cool air in a double hammock the staff had put up for me. As I lay down to read and relax, the staff came in with fresh flowers for my room. The 2 women who worked there were so attentive and caring I felt like family.

As night fell I took a walk into town for a great dinner, then came back to my little sanctuary and started a fire, with the wood they had left in the room. The logs were treated so even starting the fire was easy.

After a wonderful night's sleep in the crisp air I was ready for breakfast, which is included in the price of the room. My table was all set up and waiting for me in the glorious dining room overlooking the mountain. There, I was served homemade orange cake and a platter of the most scrumptious fresh local berries, followed by something I've never had before. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of it but it was like a fried cross between an egg roll crust or tortilla filled with sautéed mushrooms and guacamole. WOW! It was wonderful! The waitress told me the chef had won an award for this dish.

After Breakfast and a little more time to relax, I was ready to make my way back down the mountain, refreshed, cooled off and ready to go back to my home in Puerto Vallarta.

I would highly recommend you checking this place out, it a wonderful break from the bustle of Vallarta and the road trip (about 1 1/2 hours) was full of wonderful views and enjoyable in itself.
