Mexico City - Mexican lawmakers approved a minimum tax rate on companies on Wednesday, the main part of a tax reform bill sought by President Felipe Calderon.

The lower house finance committee set the rate at 16.5 percent in 2008 rising to 17.5 percent by 2010, the chamber said in a statement.

The bill still has to be passed on the floor of the lower house and in the Senate but stands a good chance of success after ruling party deputies and the opposition worked together in committee.
