A Mexican writer suspected of murdering and eating his ex-girlfriend has confessed to her killing in court but denied being a cannibal.

The mutilated body of 32-year-old Alejandra Galeana was found in the bedroom closet of Jose Luis Calva's Mexico City apartment two weeks ago, a court heard. He was allegedly hospitalised when he tried to escape the police.

During a police raid, officers also said they found an unfinished book by Calva called Cannibal Instincts.

A week ago, Calva told prosecutors he killed Galeana after an argument and fed her body to dogs.

Prosecutors also allege that Calva strangled and dismembered two other women in the last two years. He denies both charges.
