Finding Happiness Can Be a Challenge
email this pageprint this pageemail usJOY! - PVNN

Many people think that if they were only in some other place, or had some other job, they would be happy. Well, that is doubtful. So get as much happiness out of what you are doing as you can and don't put off being happy until some future date.
- Dale Carnegie, (1888-1955)

"I want to be happy this year," my client told me, "that's my wish."

"What do you need in order to be happy?" I asked her.

"If I knew that then I would be happy!" she retorted.

And she's right! Knowing what makes you happy is an essential ingredient to achieving happiness. If you don't know what you want it's very difficult to get it, just as if you don't know where you want to go, you will probably just meander about ending up wherever you are lead.

"I'd be happy if I just had more money" she decided.

"Really? I know people who have a lot of money who aren't happy, and people who have no money and are very happy, do you know anyone like that?" I asked.

"Yes," she admitted, "but money would still make it easier to be happy."

And that, right there, is another essential ingredient to understanding what it takes in order to be happy: Happiness isn't something we can buy with money. It may, as the old saying goes, make misery easier, but it still boils down to; we can buy sex, but not love; a house but not a home.

As long as we live with the illusion that happiness is available in some thing or even someone outside of ourselves, we are doomed to seek it forever.

Happiness is a choice we make, a gift we give ourselves. Every morning when you wake up you can choose to be happy – or not, the choice you make determines the day.

Your challenge this week is the same one I started my client off with: Take pen and paper and go on a mission to discover what makes you happy. Write down everything you can think of, big and small, silly and sensible, make a list of at least ten things, and keep adding to the list. Then give yourself at least one thing from that list every single day.

The more you focus on the things that bring you happiness, the happier you will become. Try it and see!
