Mexico City - Thousands of weapons confiscated from Mexican drug traffickers have added accessories and high caliber modification making them highly lethal, local authorities reported.

According to the police, captured AR-15 rifles have adaptations to make them into grenade launchers and the calibers are the ones exclusively used by the Army.

Added to these are silencers, several lengths of cannons, weight and caliber, telescopic sites of night vision or heat detectors with a range of 600 meters and others with visible or infrared lasers.

Grenades have been retrieved with caliber 40 pellets to blow up cars or turn them over during ambushes and grenade launchers that can shoot explosives at a speed of 74.7 meters per second with a 400-meter reach.

Since the investiture of the current government in 2006, 5,855 weapons have been captured according to official reports and 684 confiscations were made 2007.
