Long Beach - Long Beach Yacht Club's Doug Baker and his Andrews 80, Magnitude 80 were first to finish Wednesday in the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta race, Vallarta Race 2008, and in the proces, broke the previous race record set that year by Roy E. Disney's Pyewacket by six hours, eight minutes and one second.

But as fast as they were, Mag 80 had to settle for second-place overall on corrected time. First overall on corrected time went to fellow LBYC member Mike Campbell and Dale Williams' Kernan 70, Peligroso, beating out Baker by 26 minutes.

"I heard it was something like 20 minutes," Baker said. "Well, you never know in this kind of (ocean race) until everyone's finished. We had different (weather) conditions all the time."

"The race started off light with (Jim Madden's Reichel Pugh 66) Stark Raving Mad neck and neck. I think they sail better in light air than we do, but Sunday the wind came up and by the afternoon it was blowing over 30 knots. At that point we were able to pull away and sail our own race."

Asked if there was an event or moment in the race that stands out, Peligroso's Williams replied, "It was when we made our move around the point up to Cabo. Our watch captains were Kevin Miller and Malcolm Park. They were superb."

"As we approached the cape we were all talking. We were concerned about staying out (away from the cape) but it was Kevin that made the final decision. We were about 25 miles out and had good wind and I think that was the key decision of the race."

"We were pretty fortunate," Campbell added. "Our boat speed was really good and we could keep up with the other boats. The guys from Rosebud really helped out. It was a pretty good race for us."
