Gustavo Rivera Martinez Arrest Strikes at Arellano Cartel
email this pageprint this pageemail usAntonio O. Garza - U.S. Ambassador to Mexico

The Calderon administration’s policy of pursuing the heads of these criminal organizations continues to bear fruit.

Mexican law-enforcement agents have struck another strong blow against narcotrafficking, with the March 11th arrest of Gustavo Rivera Martinez, the de-facto head of the Arellano Felix crime family, in San Jose del Cabo.

Rivera was arrested along with Marcos Assemat Hernandez, a close associate of the deceased Ramon Arellano, showing clearly the links between the old and new Arellano leadership. Rivera is wanted on drug charges in the Southern District of California.

The Calderon administration’s policy of pursuing the heads of these criminal organizations continues to bear fruit. The Secretariat of Public Security has had a string of successes in fighting the cartels and crime bosses.

This most recent arrest demonstrates Calderon’s continuing commitment to ensure his country is protected from the criminal elements that seek to undermine security and public safety on both sides of the border. The United States shares this commitment and stands with Calderon and the Mexican people in this critical fight.
