Puerto Vallarta — Marina Nuevo Vallarta will be torn down and rebuilt as a luxury marina with a better mix of slip sizes, according to the marina’s new director general Lic. Emilio Oyarzabal Garcia.

Marina Nuevo Vallarta is the older and smaller of two marinas located inside the popular Nuevo Vallarta Inlet, 3.5 nautical miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta’s municipal harbor.

“We are very excited to be starting our construction,” Oyarzabal said. “We will remove all the pilings and docks to replace everything with new ones.” The marina is to contain a new floating fuel dock and will be built by the same contractor who recently finished Marina Riviera Nayarit in nearby La Cruz.

Oyarzabal said he expects some of the 230 new slips in Marina Nuevo Vallarta to be ready for occupancy this fall, mostly in the larger slip ranges. Reservations are already being taken by email at emilio(at)marinanuevovallarta.com.

When all 230 slips are completed, probably in 2009, more than 90 slips will be designed for yachts 60 feet and longer, with larger end slips. About 25 slips will be for yachts to 56 feet, 24 for 46-footers, 39 for 41-footers and fewer than 65 for boats to 30 feet.

About 35 slips of different sizes will be available for long-term lease. Oyarzabal said the new marina’s footprint will not be much larger, but the bottom will be dredged deeper.

The new owners are a group based in Monterrey, and Oyarzabal is the son of one of the partners. He said the new dockmaster, Juan Estrada, has worked for him for the past three years and is well liked for his kind manner and good service.

Last year, several dock fingers were torn out to allow larger yachts to tie up between the concrete pilings. The marina had become a refuge for yatistas looking for an inexpensive place to leave a boat unattended.

More than 50 yachts presently in Marina Nuevo Vallarta will need to find new berthing as construction begins in April.
