Jalisco and Nayarit governments hope to take public transport to the high seas as part of a new massive interstate public transport corridor that will include water taxis.

The first planned route would use "aquataxis" with a capacity of up to 40 passengers to cover routes between specially-designed docks at Punta de Mita, Punta Caracol, Cruz de Hunacaxtle, Bucerias, Nuevo Vallarta, Boca de Tomates, Marina Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta, Mismaloya and several other spots along the Bahía de Banderas coast.

The project, which also includes another luxury bus route along the Bahía de Banderas coast and an accompanying network of bicycle paths, will require Jalisco and Nayarit to work together in hammering out discrepancies between the traffic laws in each state.

Those eager to bid farewell to the rough and winding roads around Puerto Vallarta will need to be patient. According to the ambitious Jalisco officials presenting the idea, water taxis are still in the planning and evaluation stage.
