email this pageprint this pageemail usBob Cohen - PVNN

The 5th Annual Kid's Cup will be held at the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club beginning Monday, June 2nd and will conclude on Sunday, June 7th and in between there will be a lot of tennis for the best kids in Mexico aged 9-16. The Canto Del Sol picked up the tournament in its 2nd year and Tennis Director Martin Parra knew he had something special and has been hosting it each year since then.

The biggest prize a kid can ask for is a victory in their age division against great competition and they win a free trip to the World's Kid's Cup held this year in Paris, France. Of all tournaments held in Puerto Vallarta, the Kid's Cup generates more entries than any other. Already confirmed as of May 30th were 410 kids entered and about 500+ are expected as the final count.

There will be qualifying on Monday and Tuesday and with the large number of entrants, four other resort tennis courts will be utilized to accommodate all the players. Besides the Canto Del Sol, Los Tules, the Holiday Inn, Sheraton and Hotel Pelicanos will be venues. The main draw will be set and play will begin on Wednesday and by Friday all play will be at the Canto Del Sol for the quarterfinals and until the champions are crowned. On Wednesday at 8:00 Pm the official inauguration will be held at the Canto Del Sol.

In the country of Mexico 30 of the 32 states will be represented and many states will have a boy and girl in each age slot. No player in the five year history of the Kid's Cup from Puerto Vallarta has ever qualified, however Jalisco has had kids that have played in the World's Kid's Cup, which is generally held in Europe.

The city of Puerto Vallarta will be able to further showcase that it is a resort tennis destination; as well over 2,000 people will be here for the event. Families of the players will make a one or two week vacation surrounding the tournament. Recent efforts by the city and the Canto Del Sol have brought more tournaments to the area, and this is the 3rd large tournament in the last four weeks.

The stands should be full of cheering families, unlike other tournaments that feature professionals or regular local tournaments. For more information call the Canto Del Sol at (322) 226-1023, ext. 4187. We might be able to see a future tennis star at a young age, so join the crowd and enjoy superb play by the youngsters. Admission is free.
