President Felipe Calderón acknowledges the fact that there are reliable police who do their job of looking after citizens well.

Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo - During his inauguration of the José María Morelos Sports Unit, President Felipe Calderón stated that his government is working to clean up Mexico on various fronts, such as police chases and eliminating dishonest officials in charge of guaranteeing citizens' security.

As part of the “Let’s Clean Up Mexico, Zones in Recovery Strategy,” the President gave the residents of Quintana Roo these sports facilities, the rehabilitation of which cost 11 million pesos, paid for by Federal Government and the Cancún Town Hall.

On the subject of police chases, President Calderón said that a number of actions have been carried out that have damaged the logistic and financial structure of organized crime in Mexico.

He recalled the fact that nearly 16,000 weapons have been confiscated from organized crime and that Mexico hold the world record for seizing cocaine, and money, in a single operation, both of which occurred last year.

He also said that work is underway to eliminate corrupt police officers, adding that, “Because we know the police often take care of but sometimes don't take care of citizens, because there are also police that look after criminals. We are also getting rid of them and doing a thorough spring-cleaning.”

Accompanied by State Governor Félix González Canto, Felipe Calderón declared that it will not be easy to rid Mexico of crime, as a result of which he asked the residents of Quintana Roo not to abandon Recovered Public Spaces, in order to keep them away from criminals.

During his address, Governor Félix González Canto supported the work being done by Federal Government and hailed the fact that although other countries are tightening their belts, in Mexico, social programs continue to be implemented while the budget for providing services for citizens has actually increased.
