The President will continue to monitor the situation in Tamaulipas and other states in Mexico affected by the hurricane.

Mexico City - Mexican President Felipe Calderón rang Governor of Tamaulipas Eugenio Hernández Flores this morning to assess the effects of Hurricane Dolly in the state and confirm his government's support of the residents of Tamaulipas.

The state governor told the President that the municipalities where most damage has been reported are Matamoros, Reynosa and Río Bravo and that so far, no fatal victims have been reported as a result of the heavy rains although the death of a person due to an electric discharge is being investigated.

President Calderón told Governor Hernández Flores of his government's determination to maintain close collaboration to normalize the lives of the communities affected. They agreed to set up an Evaluation Committee to undertake a detailed examination of the situation that would enable coordinated actions to be undertaken for this purpose in keeping with the guidelines established in the Natural Disaster Fund.

The state governor thanked the President for the efforts made by Federal Government, particularly the civil protection actions by personnel from the Secretaries of the Interior, National Defense and the Navy, as well as the efforts made by the Federal Electricity and the National Water Commissions to use teams and technical equipment to re-establish the respective services in the three municipalities in the north of Tamaulipas.

During the conversation, the President of Mexico and the Governor of Tamaulipas evaluated the damage caused by Hurricane Dolly and indicated the actions both administrations should undertake for the benefit of the residents of Tamaulipas. Governor Hernández Flores explained that the hurricane had affected 111 colonies in the state, 39% of which had experienced flooding. It is expected that, with the help of members of the National Defense and Navy secretaries, as well as CONAGUA, the water have been drained within a maximum of 48 hours.

President Calderón repeated the importance that preventive actions had had in preventing further damage, adding that support will continue to be provided for the population that is still evacuated and those that have begun to return to their homes.

The President has undertaken a series of actions to restore normality to the communities affected, as part of the National Civil Protection System, including the following:

President Calderón instructed the Federal Electricity Commission to deploy a thousand workers, 420 vehicles, two helicopters, emergency plants and the necessary equipment and supplies to continue dealing with the damage and restore service as soon as possible.

The President also ordered the National Defense, Navy and Public Security Secretariats to provide over a thousand officers as well as various vehicles to contribute to the transport and distribution of food, clothing and medication and to undertake air and land surveillance.

The National Center of Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control (CENAVECE) sent qualified personnel to the area both to deal with those staying at the hostels and to visit the communities affected. The Federal Commission for Protection from Health Risks (COFEPRIS) visited the state to assess the situation, focusing on surveillance of the quality of water in the network, which has been chlorinated and reports that there has been no damage to the drainage infrastructure.

The President will continue to monitor the situation in Tamaulipas and other states in Mexico affected by the hurricane.
