2nd Annual Copa Puerto Vallarta Tennis Tournament at Canto Del Sol, Sept. 2nd - 7th

Last year's champion Carlos Palencia (L) with finalist Juan Elizondo.

The 2nd Annual Copa Puerto Vallarta professional tennis tournament will be held beginning Tuesday, September 2nd and will conclude on Saturday, September 7th, 2008 at the Canto Del Sol Resort and Tennis Club. Tennis Director Martin Parra announced on short notice that Puerto Vallarta and the Canto Del Sol has landed this important professional tournament for the second consecutive year.

Playing under the auspices of the FMT (Mexican Tennis Federation), a large total prize purse of $50,000 pesos will be divided among the 16 participants. The tournament is sure to draw at least 5 of the top 10 tennis professionals in Mexico for two reasons. First, a $50,000 pesos purse is extremely large for a Mexican only tournament. The second reason is that this tournament will serve as a warm up for the Mexican Davis Cup team, who plays Uruguay in Leon, Guanajuato on September 19th - 21st.

The upcoming Davis Cup match insures that the best players in Mexico will be in Puerto Vallarta for the Copa at the Canto Del Sol. There will be eight (8) direct entries, four (4) wild card entries and four (4) qualifying entries. The four players that qualify will play at least one and probably two matches to earn their way into the main draw. Qualifying will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, with the main draw beginning after the qualifications.

First prize will be $16,000 pesos and 80 FMT points, with 2nd place receiving $10,000 pesos and 60 points. Any player that enters will receive a minimum of $500 pesos and earn one point. As each round of play progresses, the competition will be harder and the purse and points higher.

The tournament will also be accompanied by an "Open" A, B, C and D singles competition. Depending on the amount of entries, the amateur part of the tournament will begin either Tuesday or Wednesday. The cost to enter the amateur competition is $200 pesos and the deadline is Monday, September 1st, although players will most likely be accepted a bit later than the stated deadline.

For more information, call the Canto Del Sol at 226-0123, extension 4187. Come out and watch the pros and compete in the amateur division as well.
