Summer Fun at Los Mangos Library

Many people do not know that we have a fabulous library here in Puerto Vallarta - Biblioteca Los Mangos. Remember when you were a child, lazy summer days at the library? I can still remember the smells - soft, worn pages of a favorite book, the "mimeograph" machine odor, long, smooth wooden tables and hard chairs. A trip to the library was always - and still can be - a marvelous experience.
"But," you are thinking, "I don't read in Spanish!" Not to worry! The English book section is colossal! There are rows upon rows of titles, from cookbooks to autobiographies, novels to art. Hundreds of hours have been put in by dedicated volunteers to create a first-rate library both in English and in Spanish.
And it does not end with just books! Los Mangos offers a wide medley of other activities. Movies, dance productions, art classes, art exhibits to name a few. Most movies and productions are at minimal to no charge, so this is also a very budget-friendly manner to spend some time! There are also rows of books for sale for a mere $5 pesos each!
The library was inaugurated on November 28, 1996 under the name of Pro Biblioteca de Vallarta AC, headed by Bernice Starr and Carlos Mungia Fregoso and thanks to a multitude of donors, benefactors as well as municipal and state agencies.
The dance studio features both productions and classes in folkloric, classic, contemporary and jazz. On September 26, 2008 at 7 pm Los Mangos will feature the dance group of "Espacio Cero," a contemporary dance company formed in Puerto Vallarta in 2007 under the direction of Pedro Garcia and Kenia Murillo. What a wonderful way to spend a sultry September evening.
Los Mangos has several large salons that are perfect for meetings and speakers programs as well. Look for a full month of special events in November as the library celebrates its twelfth anniversary, including a very special concert by the Vallarta Chamber Orchestra on November 28, 2008.
A library should be a vital part of our lives as well as the lives of our children and grandchildren. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of this jewel in our midst.
