Hurricane Gustav hits Cuba

Havana - Presidents and representatives of numerous governments have expressed their support for Cuba and offered assistance to help deal with the devastating effects of hurricane Gustav on the eastern part of the province of Pinar del Rio and the Isle of Youth.

President Raul Castro received a telephone call on Tuesday morning from his Russian counterpart Dimitri Medvedev, who reiterated his solidarity with the island’s people. The Russian government offered emergency assistance that has already begun to arrive to Cuba in large cargo planes.

The two leaders also noted during their conversation that bilateral relations are increasing. Ties were given a boost by the recent visit of Russian Vice President Igor I. Sechin and an important delegation to Cuba, allowing for medium and long-range projections of economic and commercial ties.

Presidient Medvedev said he would prioritize the implementation of accords associated with Cuba’s national electro-energy system.

Likewise, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took personal interest in the damage caused by the powerful hurricane and has expressed his sincere offer of assistance to the Cuban people.

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe also showed interest in learning of the losses suffered and offered his country’s assistance to Cuba.

In that same spirit, numerous messages and offers of help have begun to arrive from Foreign ministries, ambassadors and other government authorities. Among them, China, Bolivia, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Cayman Islands, Peru, St. Lucia and Timor-Leste.
