Reeling in Students at the College Fair
email this pageprint this pageemail usJessica Reyes - PVNN

More than 400 high school students gathered at the Marriott Hotel in Marina Vallarta on October 3rd to meet with college representatives from around the world.

Competition for slots at universities worldwide is at an all time high, but bi-lingual skills and an immersion in a multi-ethnic community give Bay of Banderas high school kids an advantage.

On October 3rd Marina Vallarta's Marriott Hotel hosted a college extravaganza. More than 400 hopeful students set out to gather information about their future universities talking directly to college representatives about anything they pleased.

Many students like the fair because they can ask any questions they want and therefore have a better idea about what to study and where to study. Many students said they found out that the college they originally had in mind was, in fact, not the college for them. Others ended up finding the college that was their destiny.

It was even possible for students to obtain financial-aid and a scholarship just by making a good impression.

The list of colleges that attended this special event are too numerous to mention individually. However, the most distinguished names from the United States included Boston University, University of Texas, Wales University, Michigan State, Rice University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Bard College, and many more.

From Mexico, schools such as the Tec of Monterrey, ITAM, Cuauhtémoc University and Alberta Education Centre attended. From Canada, prestigious schools like Carleton University, York University, Emily Carr University, the University of British Columbia, University of Western Ontario and Sheridan College were represented. And from Switzerland, representatives from the Lausanne Hotel School and Les Roches School of Hotel Management were there to assist students.

This is the second successful year the fair was held in Puerto Vallarta, thanks to the organization and support provided by the American School of Puerto Vallarta.

It is unsure where next year's college fair will land, but wherever it is, all students will leave with a sharper eye for the future.

Jessica Reyes is 17 years young and attends the American School of Puerto Vallarta. She was born in Puerto Vallarta but moved to Arizona for 12 years. This year will be her third year back in paradise. Jessica loves to dance, take photos and travel. She hopes to major in broadcast journalism and looks forward to being your local news girl!
